An automaton is a mechanical device that is designed to perform a series of movements or actions in a predetermined manner, often in a repetitive manner.
Automata can range in complexity from simple machines that perform basic movements, such as a wind-up toy, to highly sophisticated devices that simulate human or animal movements in great detail. They are typically powered by a motor or a hand-crank mechanism, and may use a variety of mechanisms such as gears, levers, cams, and springs to achieve their movements.
